Tanja of Pretty Gingham tagged me. Here are the rules:

1. Respond & rework the questions on your blog, replace one question that you dislike with a question of your own invention, add one more question of your own.

2. Tag eight other un-tagged people.

***

What is your current obsession? Salmiak. I seem to have a craving either for salmiak or chocolate, currently it's salmiak.

What are you wearing now? My favourite pajamas, made of soft, turquoise cotton flanel. Ready for bed!

Do you nap a lot? Yes, nowadays I do. We nap together with my little son on our huge bed. Lots of snuggling before and after is the best part of it.

Who was the last person you hugged? That would be my little boy, O.

If you were a tree, what tree that would be? A spruce.

What's for dinner? Chicken, seasoned sort of Indian style, and rice. Fruit sallad for dessert.

What was the last thing you bought? Sunglasses. I finally found a pair I really like. They are quite a necessity, I tend to get a mean headache after a while in bright sunlight. I've lost two pairs of sunglasses, have to take good care of these new ones!

What are you listening right now? My husband turning the pages of the book he's reading.

What is your favourite weather and why? Crisp, sunny autumn weather. It makes me somehow both happy and melancholic at the same time. Happy that there is still light; melancholy comes of the unavoidable nearness of winter.

What time you usually get up? When the little one awakes - lately it's been around 7 o'clock. Too early for me, I'm an evening person.

What is your most challenging goal right now? To live contentedly and purposefully in this phase of my life.

Say something to the person who tagged you: Your new home looks very beautiful!

Favourite vacation spot? Italy. Also my mother-in-law's cottage in central Finland, by a beautiful lake.

What movies can you watch over and over? I don't watch movies very often nowadays, but Fanny och Alexander, Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain and Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee's version) are the films I seem to come back to over and over.

What is your favourite tea flavour? Good ol' Earl Grey never fails. I like black tea, green is not my thing.

What are you reading right now? Still enjoying The Bleak House by Dickens! Also, I just started to amuse myself with The Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield. It's a quietly humorous depiction of British upper class living in the 20's to 30's. Dh's aunt sent it to me - thank you Iiris!

What is your current guilty pleasure? Interior magazines. Lately I've been buying so many I don't have time to read them properly, hence the guilt.

Where is the landscape of your mind? In a forest of birches or other deciduous trees in early spring, just when evening begins to fall. The ground is covered with dead leaves, grass and twigs in the most subtle shades of grey and brown. Trees, still bare, look like ink drawings against the sky. The air is still cold, it's calm and quiet. But buds are visible in the trees and there's a happy sound of a creek somewhere near.

What is the latest quotation which made you impressed? Uh, this is hard, I never remember any good quotations... Here's a not-so-brilliant-one: "Beauty is taking off the unnecessary" by Michelangelo Buonarroti (my lame translation from Finnish language). True, but maybe not impressive.

What ability or skill would you like to have for yourself? Conversing easily with people. I'm a bit shy.

mama's boy - äitinpoika

Today, lots of whining and clinging to mama's skirt. His first drawing softly swinging, hung up to the living room ceiling.

Tänään on kitisty oikein kovasti ja pidetty tiukkaan kiinni äidin helmoista. Ensimmäinen piirustus ripustettiin olohuoneen kattoon hiljakseen keinumaan.

for the birthday boy, again - vielä syntymäpäiväsankarille

He got presents: an old chair, a fancy car and stylish building blocks. What else could a little boy need? And mother is very pleased with them, too.

Sankari sai lahjoja: vanhan tuolin, mellevän auton sekä fiinit rakennuspalikat. Mitäpä sitä pieni poika muuta tarvitsee. Ja äitikin on noista oikein mielissään.

for the birthday boy - syntymäpäiväsankarille

Little O. is not quite so little anymore - he turned one! I can't believe it. He has taken his first steps without a helping hand from mum or dad, but doesn't really walk yet. And he has the loveliest hair, just like Emil in Astrid Lindgren's stories, according to his godmother J. He is so very dear!

For his birthday I baked a slightly odd looking strawberry cake, sewed a bunting above the window (you can see a glimpse of it in my last post!) and found some fine and dandy party clothes. Black and white gingham shirt, fun black corduroy cropped trousers (from Tulip and Nettle) and then a bird apron. For it, I used the same pattern as before, but didn't add any seam allowances. The fit is much better! The chubby bird is a test print I made at work a year ago.

Pönäkkä lintu on viime vuonna töissä tehty kankaanpainokokeilu.

wednesday - keskiviikko

Sunshine and a new, utterly floral shirt for spring. What a fine Wednesday!

Auringonpaistetta ja uusi, kukallisista kukallisin kevätpaita. Mainio keskiviikko!

the 32nd picture in the 4th folder - 4. kansion 32. kuva

I haven't been tagged to do this but was intrigued to see what's the 4th photo in the 4th photo folder on my computer. Well, it's not this one. The 4th folder is called Self Portraits and since I don't feel comfortable showing my face, this was the only picture I could put here! Me, spring night in 2007, wearing my favourite blouse. It's still my favourite.

It was interesting to see those self portraits again, I had forgotten them. Most of the pictures were very serious looking, maybe because teeth show well when smiling and I don't like my teeth. Or maybe I'm just of a serious nature.

a shake - ravistus

Eating, now that is a messy thing. So I made a bib.

Some of my tired numbness has been shaken off, I think it's because of all the encouraging words from you, dear readers, and also to inspiration from lovely Juliette. She made such a sweet - and above all simple and quick - apron/bib to her son that I had to register to etsy, get the pattern and sew away. Only after trying it on O. I realized the pattern must have had seam allowances already included in it (as North American patterns have, I suddenly remembered...), for the bib had plenty of room for growth.

Still, it was lovely to sew. The pattern went together nicely, sewing machine hummed as prettily as always and oh how good it was to make something! I'm hoping hoping hoping to make another bib. Soon.

Syöminen, se vasta on sotkuista puuhaa. Siispä tein ruokalapun.

Osa väsyneestä turtumuksestani on ravisteltu pois, luullakseni teidän rakkaiden lukijoiden ansiosta. Kiitos rohkaisevista sanoista! Reilusti on kasvunvaraa.

Good books, Bleak House by Dickens and The Creative Family by SouleMama. I'm loving both, but Dickens especially. How come I've never read any of his works before? I will, for sure.

Good bisquits and tea.

The pleasant feeling of accomplishment after putting Christmas ornaments back into their boxes. The Christmas tree candleholders still need to be cleaned, though.

Hyvät kirjat, Dickensin Kolea talo Kersti Juvan hienona suomennoksena ja SouleMaman The Creative Family. Tykkään molemmista, mutta Dickensistä aivan erityisesti. Miten ihmeessä en ole aikaisemmin lukenut yhtäkään hänen kirjoistaan? Parannan tapani.

Hyvät keksit ja teetä.

Miellyttävän aikaansaapa olotila, kun sain joulukoristeet viimein pakattua takaisin laatikoihinsa. Kuusen kynttilöiden pidikkeet ajattelin kyllä vielä puhdistaa pahimmista steariiniroiskeista.

quiet and cold - hiljaista ja kylmää

It's been quiet here in my nook for a long time. Again. I can't seem to obtain the sort of intentive, mindful presence in my life that is so important to meaningful being, and to blogging also. I feel numb, like I can't even see the beauties of everyday life that used to make my day. I just don't come to think of them. I let things pass unnoticed, I get cold and rigid in my thinking. It's not the freezing cold weather - it's the lack of drawing, crafting, sewing and all kind of creative thinking connected to those things in my life. I'm constantly putting my needs on that front aside, and it doesn't do me good. Not at all.

This is something I'm trying to solve. Being at home with O. is such a happy thing in many, many ways. I should just learn to shape my life so that there can be room for making things and for seeing beauty.

I've been mulling over the thought of abandoning the Thimble. Why blog when the "handmade fineries and everyday delights" Little Thimble was about are lost and posting becomes a duty instead of a joy? Then again, blogging, by the mindfulness it requires might be the way of restoring them back into my days. So, I'm continuing. I hope.

Toivoakseni.
